Stephen Maher has written what can best be described as down-east-lowlife-noir. Maher has a gift for description, scene-setting, and atmosphere. But in this outing, that's overcome by a routine plot involving unappealing characters doing nasty things with an unremitting stream of foul language. By the end of the book, one wonders whether Mr. Maher took a bet to see how many "f" expletives he could use in a single novel, and surely he won that bet!
