From a novel inspired by a true story. It is the true story quality that pervades the movie. Small budget movies need to be able to appeal to an audience, which might evoke the word 'pander'. 'Henry, the Serial Killer' or 'Night of the Living Dead' feed fear. Some others might feed love or hope; these might find an audience, even though they are dishonest and manipulative. Stories of people coping with the difficulties of society's constraints are staples of foreign films, more than domestics. Even our domestic family drama's seem to feature people living pretty comfortably. Films like this one engage interest because the characters and situation touch us in our reality, rather that take us away from it. The young girl here is a standout; perhaps she'll catch some of what Jennifer Lawrence caught. But all hands are excellent. It's a mark of something that one can't really identify a bad guy here.
