A Spy Called James

the True Story of James Lafayette, Revolutionary War Double Agent

James Lafayette! ‘What a brave man’ I thought while reading the only book ever written about him. The author brought out an unseemly obscure, pivotal player of the revolutionary war to light 235 years later. A Spy called James, written by Anne Rockwell and illustrated by Floyd Cooper, is the true story of James Lafayette, a Revolutionary War double agent. He befriended French General Lafayette, earned the trust of Cornwallis, and even crossed paths with Benedict Arnold. Without him, the war very well might have ended drastically different. Fighting for America was not this spy and slaves only battle but James also perseveringly battled for his own freedom. A Spy called James shines a light on this part of American history, a part of the Revolutionary War kept in the shadows for too long. This book is an excellent read for people of all ages.
