I absolutely love this book and hate it at the same time. The emotions running through my head after I read this kept me awake for hours before I could fall asleep. The ending hit me so hard I was emotionally reeling with impact, but in a good way. This dystopian sci-fi novel about self-worth is actually so great. I know I said this already, but I really do love it. Nemesis bonded with me in a way that was psychologically understandable, (not like the actual diabolic bond, of course.) Looking back now, I noticed that there was actually a lot of parts that blew me off the expected course, but I just didn't notice them because I got way too into the book. The characters are all so real that you don't even feel as if it is a book, but as if they are all around you at times. Awesomely awesome! 5/5 Stars - @Siri of the Teen Review Board of the Hamilton Public Library The Diabolic, written by S.J Kincaid takes place in a dystopian and futuristic society, where the influence of technology is evident in every aspect of living. Including in the very meaning of survival, which introduces the main character, Nemesis who is a female Diabolic, a mixture of human and engineered genetics, who can be defined as a literal killing machine. As a Diabolic, her mission is to protect her bonded companion, who happens to be Sidonia, the daughter of a very influential family in this science-fiction world. However, when it comes to protecting Sidonia, Nemesis is willing to sacrifice more than just her life, but when the only way to protect Sidonia happens to be impersonating Sidonia herself, Nemesis is left to become the one thing she thought was impossible. She has to become human, no longer a cold killing machine. This book is filled with secrets, where all readers are left wondering the true intentions and meanings of all the characters. Overall, I recommend this book to 14-year-olds and older, with a rating of 4/5 stars. - @Because_Logic of the Teen Review Board of the Hamilton Public Library The Diabolic is an appeasing book to all audiences, even those who are not fans of sci-fi novels. A mix of dystopian and thriller, this book follows the story of Nemesis, a diabolic made to serve Princess Sidonia von Impyrean. Bonded together by force, Nemesis strives to protect Sidonia in any way possible; enough to kill her enemies with ultra-powerful strength. All is well until Sidonia’s father begins tracking ancient ways of living, and Sidonia is called in the presence of the Emperor. Nemesis serves in Sidonia’s place to protect her from the evil of the Emperor and experiences the way of life in the Chrysanthemum; from the mad prince to finding friendships in unexpected places. Travel through the Chrysanthemum and beyond with Nemesis as she struggles to find the truth about who she really is, what she really feels and the unexpected bonds she has with the world. Kincaid beautifully illustrates the emotions from tragedy, fear, compassion and love that delivers an intense message- maybe we can all live beyond what we are capable of.
