I loved this novel! I loved the language and the descriptions. Hoffman definitely has a way with words. CeeCee had to take care of her mother from age 7 until her mother died when CeeCee was 12; her father was rarely there. Because of her circumstances, CeeCee did not have any friends her age. She had her next door neighbour, an elderly woman. When she moved to Savannah she still only had older women in her life. They were/became her safety net. But the lack of kids her age in her life added to her insecurity about going to school in the fall. One of the comments said that once CeeCee's mom died and CeeCee moved, the plot became boring. I disagree. It was less intensely dramatic, but plenty of interesting and even scary things happened after the move. I was kept interested the entire book. I've already read the second book and am looking forward to more.
