Small Steps

the Year I Got Polio

I enjoyed this book and was surprised to see how poor in some areas the care was in the 1940s and 1950s for helpless patients who were paralyzed from the neck down. Patients had little protection against insensitive and heartless care givers who in some cases as described in this book lacked common civility. However, there were also many examples of dedicated doctors, nurses and physiotherapists who did their best to improve the comforts and the spirits of the infirmed. Thankfully, what would have to be considered as abusive care is a thing of the past. This book is a quick read and very informative. Recommended by Doctor-at-bass-fishing. T. A.
