Samurai Santa

a Very Ninja Christmas

The wackiness of this decidedly oddball Christmas tale starts with the endpapers. Santa is surrounded by the heads of snowmen and ninja, all looking alike. But upon closer inspection we see that there are subtle variations among all the figures, so that no two are exactly the same. It’s a sort of “Where’s Waldo?” for the Christmas set. The simple pictures are a little reminiscent of Dr. Seuss and Tim Burton, what with the twisted trees, tiny limbs on the characters and aggressive, fighting snowmen. But it’s the story that makes you smile as all the ninjas rally forth to find the mysterious intruder who has interrupted their Christmas Eve bedtime. The story is unique, quite different from the usual holiday fare (do I see an animated Christmas special on the way?), as it features a chubby elf with some surprise moves of his own. It’s a fun story with a moral and a punchline. Santa does indeed come to all little boys and girls, whether near or far.
