To be very honest, I wasn't sure I wanted to continue with Falling Kingdoms after reading the previous novel in this series, Rebel Spring. Not much happened and the characters were flat and annoying. After hearing what happened at the end of the series (yes, I spoiled it for myself), I decided it was worth another try. I am SO glad that I read Gathering Darkness. The story picked up tenfold, the character development was where I wanted it to be, and the plot is actually advancing. The relationship between Magnus and Cleo is interesting and intriguing, and progressing at a believable pace (possibly a little slow for me, but definitely on the right track). Lucia has blossomed, both as an individual and in relationship to her father, her brother, and Alexius- not to mention that her magic has hit the ground running. Outside forces, namely Ashur, Amara and Melenia, are advancing the plot to a point where things are happening with the Kindred. Lucia's sorceress powers are growing, and we're finally seeing more magic in the story- as opposed to the first book in the series, where there was hardly any. One of my only sticking points here, as before, is Jonas. He's a bumbling fool who hardly does anything of value. He did manage to free some prisoners and help out Cleo, but only because he had help from Petra, Lysandra and Felix. His chapters are too long and don't really add value to the story. I have taken to skimming them just to get to Magnus, Cleo, and Lucia. I'm also not sure that Nic's perspective is necessary. I would rather have seen Amara or Ashur's viewpoint, to be honest. At this point, however, I'm completely invested in Magnus and Cleo, and I will absolutely be diving right into Frozen Tides.
