Sofia looks up to her older cousin, Rosario, and loves wearing Rosario’s hand-me-down clothes. She wants to wear a purple dress to Rosario’s quinceañera, but when she tries it on, she discovers it is too tight. As a result, Sofia, her mom, and sister decide to adopt healthier habits and exercise. While it is nice that the book illustrates living a healthy lifestyle, the fact that the motivation for a third grader was to lose weight is disconcerting. Children who are insecure about their size may get the impression that the goal of changing your diet and exercising is to become thinner, as opposed to healthier. If you are looking for a book to help a child learn about healthy eating and exercising habits try: Eating Right by Mary Elizabeth Salzmann, Good for Me and You by Mercer Mayer, Exercise by Sharon Gordon, Being Active by Mary Elizabeth Salzmann, and Bear Likes Jam by Ciara Gavin.
