SHAMELESS requires a certain Elizabethan dramatic suspension of disbelief. For how else to explain Frank Gallagher's (William Macy) CrossFit perfect physique, his beautiful longhair, his electric facility with language, his ceaseless virility? He is supposed to be a swindling, abusive middle-age alcoholic. It makes no sense unless Frank Gallagher is actually the Earl of Oxford slumming on the Southside of Chicago. A real-life Frank Gallagher would be bloated, boring, impotent, with a fatty liver and delirious with alcohol-induced psychosis. Nonetheless the show works, and works well.
