Dec 20, 2016TEENREVIEWCREW rated this title 3.5 out of 5 stars
The book ‘Legend’ takes place in the dystopian future of the Earth, however, it is similar in some ways to the early 20th century: multiple large-scale wars, and prominent propaganda. It follows the two main characters, Day, a criminal running from the government, and June, the most promising genius in the country. Through a series of unfortunate events, June and Day are set against each other by the government without knowing it. The book is very engaging, and it continuously makes you want to know what happens next. Both of the characters have, while somewhat stale personalities, are interesting, and character development is gradual(which is good!) but obvious. The main genre of the book is adventure(as is pretty obvious), but the book tries to add a splash of the romance genre into the book at the end, which seems very misplaced and unlike the rest of the book. Overall, the book is interesting, the characters are interesting, and it has a somewhat new spin on an old and clichéd type of plot. The only thing that I would say is that it has some very ‘strange’ points in the book where it tries to just throw in a new genre that had no place throughout the rest of the book. 3/5. @Xeno of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library This book is about two teenagers: an outcast boy named Day and a girl named June – who’s brother allegedly was murdered by Day. This book is a great read for teens and up. The story plot is wise, heavily inspired by “Les Misérables” although in sci-fi setting. People who also enjoyed the Hunger Games series might find this book ideas somehow familiar. The author packed this novel with lots of action and great description of characters and settings. The book kept my attention till the last page. What I like about it is that the story could finish in this one book, all quest and plots were solved and answered, but I was positively surprised that it is a part of the series of 3 books, I am definitely going to read other with hope they are as good as this one. 4 stars. @wolfteen of the Hamilton Public Library Teen Review Board Legend by Marie Lu is one of many books that have similar dystopian future plot points. June and Day are from two different worlds, until June's brother is murdered and Day is the suspect. I actually liked Day as he seemed like a more complicated character with motives for his actions, but I can't say the same about June. Though I eventually came to like her, I originally thought she was naive or spoiled. I turned this hate to Thomas, who I found unbearable. I was pleasantly surprised with some plot twists that definitely made some rather slow paced parts more enjoyable. I found myself satisfied with the ending and though I won't be continuing the series, I would recommend this book if you enjoy a good dystopian novel. 3.5 Stars @Ruby_Tuesday of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library The book Legend by Marie Lu is a thriller novel about two people who are deceived and betrayed by their corrupt government and turned against each other. The novel is for more mature readers as there are gory scenes and difficult to understand subjects. This book is a page turner as every chapter leaves the reader in suspense and anticipation. It is an eye-opener for the reader as they will start to notice similarities between certain elements in the book and connect them to the readers' daily lives. 4/5 stars @TheMayor of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library
