Hmm, I wanted to like this book about enduring love, but found it difficult to respect the subject character who deserts his family in New York without a word and returns to his native Burma to his teen-age lover. The story elements, while providing a thoughtful theme, defied credibility and seemed to belong in the magic-realism genre. Further, the author’s device of presenting the entire back story in enormous expository chunks through a third party who “just happens” to come into the picture created a very confusing point of view. He supplied impossible, minute details that would have been far better served by an omniscient point of view.
