While I think the film is a little overlong and that the celebrated "Born in a Trunk" number stops the movie cold, this really is a fantastic, emotional powerhouse of a feature. The original 1937 movie is a classic, but this one is superior in terms of adding more nuance and depth to the characters.
Judy Garland and James Mason are heartbreaking and likable as the doomed couple, making this a tragedy of the highest order. It's also one of George Cukor's last great movies, using the Cinemascope format to great effect.
