Not a big fan of westerns? That's okay. Read this book anyway. Because its genre is only that, especially in its setting; the time and a place. This is one part character study--the protagonist, the hangman of the title. One part criminal and crime study. And simply one of the best books I've ever read. And I read a LOT. It's so much different than most of the author's many, many novels, and so much deeper that I was amazed when I read it and still am, years later. Estleman is an accomplished writer in whatever genre he work in (Aces and Eights, for the western fan; The Confessions of Al Capone for historical novel fans), but THIS one...a cut above.
