** spoiler alert ** This was my first Garth Nix novel, and while I appreciated the pacing of the story, and the development of the characters some parts of the telling were not to my taste. I did enjoy the catlike character, the descriptions of the world and how magic works, as well as the contrast between the two sides of the wall and how societies were different because of the lack and strength of magic. My main struggle was not knowing information. Not only did I not know details of how and why something was happening, along with the main character, but other characters did know and were unable to explain. I found this very frustrating. I know is a writing style to just jump right into action with a story, and give explanations as you go, but this was that and more. My other struggle was the ending. The story just stops. You know the characters are alive, and kinda how they survived the final main event, but not how anything is resolved. There is a little over one page of a character kinda waking out of unconsciousness where is is confirmed the two main characters are alive, but that is all. The next book is years later, and centers around new characters and just mentions these characters in passing.
