Kit Owens harbored only modest ambitions for herself when the mysterious Diane Fleming appeared in her high school chemistry class. But Diane's academic brilliance lit a fire in Kit, and the two developed an unlikely friendship--until Diane shared a secret that changed everything between them. More than a decade later, Kit thinks she's put Diane behind her forever, and she's begun to fulfill the scientific dreams Diane awakened in her. But the past comes roaring back when she discovers that Diane is her competition for a position both women covet: taking part in groundbreaking new research led by their idol. Soon enough, the two former friends find themselves locked in a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse that threatens to destroy them both.

An interesting mystery and psychological thriller set in a science laboratory. Told from the perspective of a woman, and the two other main characters are women. I liked that aspect of the story. Also, the novel explores the nature of psychopathy, which is interesting. There is also quite a bit about the intense bonds between smart, competitive young women... and the frailty of those bonds.

I got this book because it was highly recommended but I found the story to be too over the top and, in the end, not all that interesting.

Friends, rivals, and dark secrets develop and turn into grim consequences. I found it not so much the story as the storytelling that kept my interest. Abbott has a way of taking the unbelievable and turning it into something plausable.

I find this story boring. I am reading it in bed, using the book to put me to sleep each night. I am waiting for the next book I have on hold then I will stop reading this one.
