In the sequel to ‘Labyrinth Lost,’ Lula and her family of brujas, powerful witches, are still trying to recover from what happened to them when they were sent to Los Lagos. Lula still isn’t feeling like herself and on her way to her boyfriend Maks’ game, a horrific incident occurs: she and her classmates are involved in a bus crash. The crash kills all of her classmates, Maks included, but Lula isn’t ready to let him go yet. She and her sisters attempt to heal him with their powers, but unbeknownst to them, they are dealing with a great and dangerous power that brings unpredictable consequences. I like that this book is viewed from Lula’s perspective, whereas in the first book, her sister Alejandra’s perspective was shown. This gives the story more variety and lets the reader understand her point of view. When I first started reading this, it was somewhat confusing trying to distinguish what character the book was focused on, but I eventually got that it was a different character from the first books perspective. The characters in this series are very likable and continue to develop in each book. Lula’s relationship with her family is very endearing; it brought a sense of togetherness throughout the entirety of the story. Something that makes this series intriguing is the magic system. The magic within this world is defined and expanded more from the first book, which I enjoyed. The authors writing style really captures the powers that this family has very well. Another thing that I appreciate is that the side characters are incorporated into the story just as much as the main characters are. Side characters are sometimes not shown or described enough in stories, but in this one, there was a nice balance between both Lula and her companions in the limelight. All in all, I think this was a great continuation to ‘Labyrinth Lost’ and broadened this magical universe wonderfully. -Shae-Lynn
