Mackenzie Cooper took her eyes off the road for just a moment but the resulting collision was enough to rob her not only of her beloved daughter but ultimately of her marriage, family, and friends―and thanks to the nonstop media coverage, even her privacy. Now she lives in Vermont under the name Maggie Reid, in a small house with her cats and dog. She's thankful for the new friends she's made―though she can't risk telling them too much. And she takes satisfaction in working as a makeup artist at the luxurious local spa, helping clients hide the visible outward signs of their weariness, illnesses, and injuries. Covering up scars is a skill she has mastered. Her only goal is to stay under the radar and make it through her remaining probation. But she isn't the only one in this peaceful town with secrets. When a friend's teenage son is thrust into the national spotlight, accused of hacking a powerful man's Twitter account, Maggie is torn between pulling away and protecting herself―or stepping into the glare to be at their side. As the stunning truth behind their case is slowly revealed, Maggie's own carefully constructed story begins to unravel as well. She knows all too well that what we need from each other in this difficult world is comfort. But to provide it, sometimes we need to travel far outside our comfort zones.

One second of distraction changed to course of the lives of Mackenzie and Edward. Barbara Delinsky takes us through the emotional roller coaster and feelings of guilt that these two people faced. This is a story about relationships and forgiveness.

Mom who carried huge guilt following car accident that killed her 5 yr old daughter. Created a new life to forget while on probation. Redemption and renewal

Before and Again was definitely not Barbara Delinsky's best effort.

In the final chapters of the book, I discovered how many intriguing story arcs were sacrificed to Maggie's PTSD and survivor guilt as well as Edward/Ned's beard, and the probation officer. Arrrgh.

It would have been an infinitely more intriguing book if Grace's (massage therapist) story had been developed earlier and more fully and linked to Cornelia's (postmistress) story.

Maybe the point of the book is how much we miss out on when we get stuck in emotional ruts.

What a way to show how one mistake can ruin several lives. Mackenzie is distracted by her GPS that is not cooperating while she is taking her 5-year-old daughter to a play date somewhere they haven't been. Those few seconds costs her a daughter and a marriage. Now five years later she is Maggie trying to live a safe life with 4 months left on her probation. At first I didn't understand why she was on probation when it was an accident. But slowly things are revealed that explains why she got convicted like she did. I enjoyed her new life, her friends, and how her family started to come back into her life. This book is all about hope and coming out on the other side a better person. It's also about family and what you would do for friends. I had a hard time putting this book down. I wanted to know what was happening to all the characters and I really cared for them.

Classic Barbara Delinsky novel of the emotional responses to tragedy and overcoming loss to a better life ahead.

Maggie Reid, makeup artist, has made a life for herself in Devon, Vermont, a town that attracts a lot of people who need a fresh start, no questions about the past ever asked. Her best friend, massage therapist, Grace Emory works at the Spa with Maggie and has her own secrets.

Maggie's unraveling begins when Grace's 15 yr old son, Chris, is charged with hacking, forcing Maggie chose to hide to protect herself or to stand with her friend and risk exposure. Complicating the issue is the arrival of Ned Cooper, head of the group who just purchased the Devon Inn & Spa.

Maggie must confront her past actions, and forgive herself as well as those who abandoned her in her darkest days before so she can face trying again to have a full life that includes the love of others.

It seems like it has been years since I last read Barbara Delinsky novel with her unique stories dealing with family tragedies and redemption. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and the characters.
