Excellent. So good, gives a human voice to the conflicts and problems in Afghanistan. Not for young children though - age 10 and up.

Absolutely brilliant! Everything about this film - the animation, story, music, voice acting, was mesmerizing! I remember reading the book by Deborah Ellis years ago when I was in Grade 5 and finding it very educational and intense. It's a suspenseful story about a brave girl who must pose as a boy in Afghanistan when her father is taken to prison. The movie got pretty heavy in parts, so I would say it's maybe for ages 10 and up, depending on the child. (Although it is an excellent film to spark discussion if you watch it as a family, in my opinion.)

I really appreciated this movie. It gives us from other cultures the idea of what these women and families have to live through and what it takes to have determination and willpower. Great movie, I was just made aware of the book. Great story and can be used for educational purposes

Not a children's movie. I recommend it though very graphicly sad at times. Much different than the usual animated movies. No CGI here. Fantastic Eastern fantacy style, coloring and story telling. Nominated for Oscar in 2018.

In a sense this is a depressing film as it depicts the oppression of ordinary folks by the Taliban in power. A young girl has to dress up as a boy to gain street freedom to earn money for her family. There are also stories within the story but I think this move is not totally unnecessary to for the main plot. The ending is also very much like a 'loose-end'. So, just an 'OK' watch for me.

Good movie. However, it could use moments of happiness. That would make it easier to watch the whole movie.

My daughter took this book in grade 6 and now in grade 7 we watched it. It was hard for her to watch many parts of this film. They show the oppression of women and the harshness of the Taliban as seen through the lead characters (women and children). There are beatings, tears, knives, land mines, machine guns, etc contained in this story. The coping mechanisms which are used are creative and in some cases quite wonderful. Their life is so hard. An important film which I enjoyed and was glad to have seen life from that perspective.

At our library The Breadwinner is in the children's section... ummm.. no!
This full length feature is rated "PG with a warning of violence and not recommended for young children. "

Just because a film is animated does not mean it is for children as it used to be 30 years ago. You must check the back of the box for the rating and it is very tiny in the bottom left hand corner.

This was a good story but make sure to check rating. I think because of the abuse and beatings of women by men tho realistic to the culture it is inappropriate for young children

Really wonderful movie. Animation is rare for me so I am lucky to have chanced on this. Terrific movie for adults and kids over 10 I think. By the way in Afghanistan it is not all that rare for a pre-pubescent girl to cut her hair, dress as a boy, and help the family if there is no son.
