A threat is called into the LAPD Bomb Squad, a team dispatched to a house whose owner is away, and a bomb disguised inside photography equipment exploded in the kitchen. But it is a second bomb hidden in the basement that has devastating consequences, half of the entire Bomb Squad is obliterated within seconds. The fragmented unit turns to Dick Stahl, a former Bomb Squad commander who now operates his own private security company. Having just returned from a grueling job in Mexico, Stahl is reluctant to accept the offer, but senior technicians he had trained were among those killed. On his first day back at the head of the squad, Stahl's team is dispatched to a suspected car bomb outside a gas station. It quickly becomes clear to him that they are dealing with the same mastermind behind the weapon that killed fourteen highly trained men and women barely twenty-four hours before and that the intended target may be the Bomb Squad itself. As the shadowy organization sponsoring this campaign of terror puts increasing pressure on the bomb maker, and Stahl becomes dangerously entangled with a member of his own team, the fuse on this high-stakes plot only burns faster.

A year ago at this time I read my first Thomas Perry novel, THE OLD MAN, which was superb. Not sure how I missed all his earlier books, but I did. His newest, THE BOMB MAKER, is a great read and he is now on my 'must follow' list. This book is very tightly written, full of twists and turns, suspenseful, engaging, and a great look at what it means to be on a Bomb Squad and Explosive Ordinance Disposal team. Fair warning though, if you are not into heavy technical details about bomb making or disarming/disposal, be prepared to skim through some pages where the details are abundant - that won't detract from the story line or enjoying the book. On the other hand, I did read through the details and am glad I did. The ending is actually two endings at once - both are awesome! Enjoy.

Yet another great Thomas Perry novel. Perhaps a bit more cerebral, but still most interesting and entertaining. [And if you aren't expert on Semtex, RDX, C-4 and PETN, you might just be by the ending.]
Without giving anything away, I must admit to a warm and fuzzy feeling when one specific pseudo-reporter was targeted - - I am soooo fed up with all the so-called journalists in America who are nothing more than teleprompter readers. Just a week or so ago, on a fake progressive news show - - Between The Lines [btlonline.org] - - they featured a so-called journalist who is really a CIA asset, Jefferson Morley, long a redirection specialist who practices redirecting attention at the wrong items. With fake progressive news like that, is it any wonder there are so many confused out there?
