In 1969, as the world waits for the Americans to walk on the moon for the first time, a science-loving girl named Mimi moves to a small Vermont town where she worries she won’t find any friends. As if being the new kid isn’t enough, Mimi’s Japanese-African American heritage makes her stand out almost as much as her determination to join the boys in the woodworking class. Mimi and her family are also recipients of their new neighbours' and classmates' racist attitudes. Told in verse, Mimi’s story explores the intricacies of family and friendship and what it means to help someone else stand up for what they believe in.

I absolutely loved this book. It made you think in a new way and it taught us at the same time.

A story in verse that presents the challenges of being mixed race in 1969. The verse flows easily and, although I thought events were predictable, it is a story that will appeal to tweens.
