This is one cake that will not go straight from your lips to your hips, maybe just your funny bone. So, bon appétit!

I adore Jeanne Ray!! She is hilarious - I've read all her books.
This is a story of a wonderful mom, Ruth, who bakes cakes as a stress reliever. And she's really baking these days because her mother has moved in with her; her estranged father breaks both his hands and must also come live with them. Then to top it off, her husband receives a pink slip. With tension high and money low, the characters come out of their shells to reveal hidden talents so that the family can carry on. Ray's characters are always so real plus the events have you smiling on every page. Try this - it's funny and heartwarming. (so are all her other books - Julie and Romeo, J&R again and Step-Ball Change.)

When the going gets tough, the tough -- bake cake? That's Ruth's response. When her mom moves in, husband loses his job, and her estranged father shows up on the doorstep with two broken wrists, a lot of cakes are in the offing. You'll alternate between laughing till the tears come and paging to the 12 included recipes as your mouth waters for cake! The Minneapolis setting is fun for us locals, too.

[ I thought this quote both funny and inspirational.]

"I think if you have something that you really love to do, you’re already ahead of ninety-nine percent of the people out there in the world. Look at poor Sam. That’s what his problem is, you know. He doesn’t have anything that he really loves. At least you’ve got cake."-Hollis(speaking to Ruth)

"Nobody likes to think they need to be rescued and everybody is grateful when it happens."-excerpt, Eat Cake
