Jack Reacher was alone, the way he liked it, soaking up the hot, electric New York City night, watching a man cross the street to a parked Mercedes and drive it away. The car contained one million dollars in ransom money. And Edward Lane, the man who paid it, will pay even more to get his family back. Lane runs a highly illegal soldiers-for-hire operation. He will use any amount of money and any tool to find his beautiful wife and child. And then he'll turn Jack Reacher loose with a vengeance - because Reacher is the best man hunter in the world. On the trail of a vicious kidnapper, Reacher is learning the chilling secrets of his employer's past and of a horrific drama in the heart of a nasty little war. He's beginning to realize that Edward Lane is hiding something. Something dirty. Something big. But Reacher also knows this: he's already in way too deep to stop now.

Jack Reacher has to work through the evidence to find a resolution to the situation. Because the series has similar structures, the breadcrumb clues can be spotted if you are a bit alert. In the book's "afterward" part, the presented fact that Reacher has no second thoughts about what has happened does take away from his character as his personality becomes closer to "nemesis" than human.

I've been whipping through the Jack Reacher books at about one a month for the past year or so, and not in order (having bought most of them as i see them from the Friends of the Library bookstore). While I acknowledge that they are genre books, I did find this one a bit formulaic, with plot insights that i had before Reacher did. However, that opinion's partly a consequence of the number of books in this series that I have read in such a short time, perhaps.

This is an excellent detective-thriller. It's better than the only other Jack Reacher novel I've read - The Persuader.

Lots of fun twists in the story. Far fewer fights than in the Persuader. Lower body count. This is more of a detective story than an action blow-em-up.

Great read. Hard to put down. Page turner.

Another great thriller without the usual paragraph fillers - numbers, road descriptions, and painstaking directions. This novel is set in New York city and, later, in a small town in the Norfolk area in England. The novel starts off like a kidnap, but Child has other storyline ideas to pursue here. You might guess mid-way through the book what has happened as Child leaves some good clues. Full of gory details of the walking wounded and those not left to walk. Reacher's sexual attraction to the older retired investigator does not ring true and that part of the storyline could be omitted without affecting the action/outcome.

I thought this book was a great read, although the end was a little anti-climatic.

"Jack Reacher ordered espresso, double, no peel, no cube, foam cup, no china, and before it arrived at his table, he saw a man's life change forever."
Great opening line for a thriller, while summarizing his series character, Jack Reacher, quite nicely. Reacher is the kind of man who takes his coffee seriously, and could find trouble before starting the morning cup.
