Have you ever really wanted to see a movie and felt kind of anxious the whole way through hoping it would be as good as you wanted it to be? That was this movie for me. There was no reason to be anxious though, this movie absolutely blew me away. I think the main actors could have been a tiny bit more 'natural' in their acting, but their scenes and chemistry together made me feel for them right away, and I really hoped it would end up working out well for them because, as someone even says in the movie, Benny and Christopher make a great couple .
The best part of this movie is two fold: firstly, not everyone is Caucasian. Benny's family is Mexican. On top of that, Benny and Christopher being gay doesn't even come up as a problem in the movie; both their families are completely fine with that. Their being gay isn't the issue, and neither is them being together as a couple really. Rather, something that happened when they were kids has both their families (mainly Benny's) re-experiencing a shared trauma and it is the trauma that makes it hard on Benny's family to be happy for him. It becomes a journey for Benny and Christopher individually in dealing with their parents' grief, a journey for Benny and Christopher together as they navigate being a couple and balancing their parents' wishes, and also for each family as they come to terms with their grief and try to get over a past that has been hanging over them essentially un-dealt with for over a decade.
