Published on the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of the Musee d'art moderne de Saint-Etienne Metropole, this book surveys the history of a collection that is considered one of the most important in France for twentieth-century art. Gathering over 15,000 works, of which many are internationally recognised, since 1987 this collection has opened up to other forms of expression, such as design and photography, which today are seen as distinguishing elements of contemporary artistic practice. The integration of contemporary art from Central and Eastern Europe has manifested the new engagement of the Musee d'art moderne de Saint-Etienne Metropole since 2003. This book is the first to provide an overview of works, from the early twentieth century to the present day, that are part of a collection considered one of the few in Europe that has shown such openness and diversity.
