Stop Pretending is not a story about mental disorder, but rather about a young girl dealing with a world torn apart by mental disorder. There is a fundamental difference in these two things, I think. The narrative, told in verse rather than prose, binds the reader up in a family that is being torn apart when an older sister suddenly has a nervous breakdown. The reasons for her breakdown are never discussed, only that it seemingly came from nowhere and how it affected her family.

The poetry is mostly free-verse, although there is a definite rhythm to the lines and spacing of each text. I found that the poetry worked best when read aloud, which makes sense given that poetry is meant to be spoken. Every word is slightly tinged with not only guilt, but anger and confusion. It's really quite marvelous, and I see why this book has stood the test of time since its original publication in 1999.

Strong narrative poems that share the guilt and heartache of mental illness.
