King Charles of France has announced that he is confiscating Aquitaine, and Prince Edward has sent for knights and men at arms from England to assist him in opposing the French king. Lord Gilbert Talbot is required to provide five knights, twelve squires, and twenty archers and men at arms, and wishes his surgeon, Hugh de Singleton, to travel with the party, while Hugh's wife Kate will oversee the castle. Among the party will be Sir Simon Trillowe, Hugh's old nemesis and Kate's former suitor, who had once set fire to Hugh's house. After a brawl on the streets of Oxford Sir Simon had nearly lost an ear; Hugh had sewn it back on but it had healed crooked, and Simon blamed Hugh for the disfigurement. Finding himself in the same party, Hugh resolves not to turn his back on the knight, but it is Sir Simon who should not have turned his back.

Another in the Hugh de Singleton series that not only tells a good mystery, but also enlightens us as to the process of traveling to a battle site with a large party of men who have provisions for part of the journey, but have to live off the land for the last part of the trip to the city of Limoges where King Charles has established himself. The French villagers have taken their food and belongings and hidden to protect themselves--sparse pickings for the invading army. They eat a lot of porridge. When Hugh's nemesis Sir Simon Trillowe disappears and is found dead in a village well, Hugh is the prime suspect. Sir Gilbert Talbot protects Hugh and assigns him the task of finding out who did kill Sir Simon. There is also a lesson in besieging a castle by having Cornish miners dig under the wall and set fires to weaken it. This was an entertaining way to learn about medieval warfare and a good mystery as well.
