Best listened to while flipping pages to The Secret Path graphic novel, Gord Downie's contribution to remembrance and reconciliation shines as a stand alone musical gift. The story of Chanie Wenjack's escape from residential school and untimely death is recounted through songs that imagine his thoughts and feelings in his final days, alone and trying to get home. Tragically Hip frontman, Gord Downie, tells the tragic true story of Chanie Wenjack, a 12-year-old boy who died from exposure while attempting to return home from fleeing an Ontario residential school in 1966. Downie’s project, which includes this music album, an animated film, and a graphic novel (illustrated by Jeff Lemire) is a call to Canadians to share in the healing and reconciliation of Canada’s treatment of Indigenous people.
