Best 19 Science Fiction Books of 2016

Written by a highly regarded expert on space travel and exploration, Allen Steele's Arkwright features the precision of hard science fiction with a compelling cast of characters. In the vein of classic authors such as Robert Heinlein, Isaac Asimov, and Arthur C. Clarke, Nathan Arkwright is a seminal author of the twentieth century. At the end of his life he becomes reclusive and cantankerous, refusing to appear before or interact with his legion of fans. Little did anyone know, Nathan was putting into motion his true, timeless legacy.

Convinced that humanity cannot survive on Earth, his Arkwright Foundation dedicates itself to creating a colony on an Earth-like planet several light years distant. Fueled by Nathan's legacy, generations of Arkwrights are drawn together, and pulled apart, by the enormity of the task and weight of their name.

This is classic, epic science fiction and engaging character-driven storytelling, which will appeal to devotees of the genre as well as fans of current major motion pictures such as Gravity and Interstellar.

I heard a lot of good things about this book, but man, the writing is eye roll-inducing at times. There is some seriously cheesy prose, especially when it comes to romantic interactions between men and women in the book. There are also some inconsistencies I wouldn't expect in a well-written futuristic science fiction novel -- we have the technology to send embryos to another galaxy, yet people are still paying with paper checks? It takes a day to process a new employee's identification badge? I thought it got more interesting farther into the book as it gets more and more into the future, but if this is considered one of the best science fiction books of the year, yeesh.

One of the best books I've read this year. Follows in the footsteps of the Greats and expands on the archetypes that are strewn throughout the genre. Absolutely amazing story that spans space and time and spacetime and shows how science fiction shifts and shapes the reality of technology and its advancement. Great for anyone who likes science fiction. Especially good for those who write it.

An amazing story spanning numerous generations of a family and their dream of interstellar flight. The story starts off a little slow but quickly picks up the pace as the efforts to achieve an impossible vision become reality, but are constantly threatened by both human nature and the unknown.
