There was a time when Cicero held Caesar's life in the palm of his hand. But now Caesar is the dominant figure and Cicero's life is in ruins. Exiled, separated from his wife and children, his possessions confiscated, his life constantly in danger, Cicero is tormented by the knowledge that he has sacrificed power for the sake of his principles. His comeback requires wit, skill and courage and for a brief and glorious period, the legendary orator is once more the supreme senator in Rome. But politics is never static and no statesman, however cunning, can safeguard against the ambition and corruption of others.

A fine conclusion to Robert Harris' trilogy that began with IMPERIUM and CONSPIRATA. Wonderfully performed in this audio version. A dark reflection on the fate of republican institutions when fundamental laws are twisted to advance some popular cause like warrantless spying, gay marriage, or needless wars.
(Cicero's philosophical works, briefly mentioned in the novel, are better organized and more sensible than those of the Greeks.)

Middling well done historical fiction of the last days of the Roman Republic....Shakespeare's characters fleshed out as it were.

Dictator is the last book in Harris' Cicero trilogy (Imperium, Conspirata). This volume finds Cicero just returning to Rome after promising to support his enemy, Julius Caesar. For 15 years, he works his way back up through the law courts, the Senate, and one brief shining moment as Co-Consul . Cicero is assassinated when the Republic collapses for good and Augustus ascends a throne as Emperor. Harris has written a political thriller based on ancient events that is chillingly close (minus the political assassinations in the Forum and on the streets) to today's political events.
