A dybbuk is a Jewish spirit or ghost that goes into the body of a ventriloquist and helps him with his act. One learns quite a bit about the spirit's previous life, about Jewish customs, and how the spirit gets his revenge. At the end one is left wondering how the ventriloquist will survive without the spirit in terms of his act but he does get the girl in the end.
