Sam Dryden, retired special forces, lives a quiet life in a small town on the coast of Southern California. While out on a run in the middle of the night, a young girl runs into him on the seaside boardwalk. Barefoot and terrified, she's running from a group of heavily armed men with one clear goal, to kill the fleeing child. After Dryden helps her evade her pursuers, he learns that the eleven year old, for as long as she can remember, has been kept in a secret prison by forces within the government. But she doesn't know much beyond her own name, Rachel. She only remembers the past two months of her life and that she has a skill that makes her very dangerous to these men and the hidden men in charge. Dryden, who lost his wife and young daughter in an accident five years ago, agrees to help her try to unravel her own past and make sense of it, to protect her from the people who are moving heaven and earth to find them both. Although Dryden is only one man, he's a man with the extraordinary skills and experience as a Ranger, a Delta, and five years doing off-the-book black ops with an elite team. But, as he slowly begins to discover, the highly trained paramilitary forces on their heels is the only part of the danger they must face. Will Rachel's own unremembered past be the most deadly of them all?

A tremendously fast-paced and entertaining read of a story with a sci-fi Orwellian edge that is borderline disturbing. Accept the premise and enjoy the story.

I had such high hopes for this book. But I just can't accept a twelve year old girl being psychic, escaping from her captors who have all the latest in technology to keep people from escaping, running into an ex-military super agent who immediately is on her side and battling the forces of evil, which have to be our own government. How much am I expect to believe is possible? Maybe those who like this book are more techie than I am. Many of you like the idea of 'Big Brother is Watching' our every move with spaceage technology at their fingertips with evil minds everywhere. I doubt I am going to read any of the other Lee Patrick books. My ideas of adventure are too old fashioned. The Count of Monte Christo? Treasure Island?

How good is this book? I am writing this before I have finished it. Normally a book like this will languish on my nightstand until I finally finish it with little bursts of before bed reading. I can't put this one down. Literally. I got up at 3:15 am to read. Only 80 pages left. Have to go now. Reserve this book and read it. If you love Reacher or Orphan X, this one's for you.

This book is a total page turner. Couldn't put it down from start to finish. All Patrick Lee's books are really good, really imaginative.

Good action sequences, clever use of the most modern science to explain underlying plot, but I didn't care for this novel. The author writes a bit cartoonish, having some bad buys go from jail to living large, entire 83rd floor of major skyscraper with super-expensive weaponry, so how did they come by this?????
Too moral relativistic for me - - if no one is morally or ethically distinguishable from anyone else, story loses all interest? Supposed to be adult fiction, too too cartoonish, far better quality of novels at the YA level!

A real page turner. Hated to put it down when real life intervened. An action thriller with heart.

Enjoyed this page turner. Looking forward to the sequel.

Disappointed in the premise of book. Having supernatural powers is one thing, but the ability to have individuals control others via being hooked-up to a source was a stretch. This along with repeatedly juxta-posing antagonist became boring. Got the impression it was written for a younger reader of Marvel Comics.

WOW! Have ever had multiple coincidences, they wouldn't let this happen. Unexpected ending. Can't put down book.

Sam's puzzling recent urge to run was finally explained at the end. A real page turner from start to finish. At some point, readers might have guessed what's to come, but not everything that is to unfold.

It was just as well not to sleep. Sleep brought dreams of happier times, worse than nightmares in their own way.
