In the parish of St. Bruno, sex is easy, corruption festers, and double-dealing is a way of life. Rene Shade is an uncompromising detective swimming in a sea of filth. As Shade takes on hit men, porn kings, a gang of ex-cons, and the ghosts of his own checkered past, Woodrell's three seminal novels pit long-entrenched criminals against the hard line of the law, brother against brother, and two vastly different sons against a long-absent father.

Thankfully my friend Deron remembered before I had to continue on past 77% that he told me the wrong author to read. It was not Woodrell but Pollock that he meant to recommend. I tried harder than I normally would with this piece because the author came so highly recommended, but no matter what all I could think was, "Well that kind of sucked. Mayhap his other books are better." Add this piece to a growing number of novels I am refusing to finish. No matter how hard I tried I just could not get into it. I am definitely looking forward to Pollock however and hope he, at least, lives up to the hype. And how about those Kansas City Royals? Am I right?

Crackling good writing, perfect noire x 3, for when you get tired of reading about the angst of the rich & whiny. Absolutely agree with the Publishers' weekly review - exceptional.

Really bad

This trilogy is three books in one about a police officer named Shade. I personally did not care for this because of the amount of characters, which confused me greatly.
