I found this book compelling and plausible. Mr. Rideau seems a man of integrity, so his ability to influence prison administrators is believable. He also speaks not only of those who did take his counsel to heart, but those who made life more difficult both for him and the other inmates in Angola and the other prisons he resided in over the over 40 years he spent in jail, for a crime many were released for in 10 years. Racial tensions at the time of the crime which were perpetuated by media and political opportunists prolonged Mr. Rideau's stay in prison, but also gave him more time to help reform the institutions for the better of inmates and society, while also fighting for his freedom. I'm sure that the publisher, Knopf, would have fact checked his claims and that the many people who supported him, including some wardens and judges, would have protested any embellishment of the truth, not to mention those who didn't support him.

I had high hopes for this book and I have no doubts whatsoever about the author's claims regarding the prosecution's false recounting of aspects of his crime but the more I read the more difficult it became to buy into the author's recounting of his position of power and influence over prison administrators and for that reason I could not rate this book any higher.
