Across six decades, Sir Tom Jones has maintained a vital career in a risky, unstable business notorious for the short lives of its artists. With a drive that comes from nothing but the love for what he does, he breaks through and then wrestles with the vagaries of the music industry, the nature of success and its inevitable consequences. Having recorded an expansive body of work and performed with fellow artists from across the spectrum and across every popular music genre, from rock, pop and dance to country, blues and soul, the one constant throughout has been his unique musical gifts and unmistakable voice.

" And time falls away, and it might as well be thirty years ago, with the working men's club over here, and the YMCA kids over there, and me in the middle, looking from one to the other, and trying to work out a way to please both." " The spring of 1965, and my life is suddenly a blizzard of TV appearances....And i go up to Birmingham to do ITV's THANK YOUR LUCKY STARS in the same week that the Beatles are there, doing EIGHT DAYS A WEEK--and that's a thrill because the Beatles are such a big deal at this point (and, of course, forever after )......Lennon comes on for his slot that night in a red jumpsuit, round dark shades, long hair combed back, chewing gum, with an acoustic guitar round his neck, and utterly nails Little Richard's SLIPPING AND SLIDING---crushes it with a band with a brass section. You couldn't not be impressed.....Anyway, as we stood there, he grabbed hold of my hand. It was just a gesture--the kind of thing you do when you're standing on a stage during a group finale , like linking arms for AULD LANG SYNE on New Year's Eve or something. But it felt strange, to me. Men holding hands with men....I was shy of that. So i shook it off---dropped his hand. Stupid, uptight reaction. I'm sorry now, that i did that."

Entertaining read from Tom Jones. This is no kiss-and-tell book, although TJ has had many well known affairs over the years, so don't expect that.

Instead we get a fairly comprehensive, often times very, very funny review of his life from his birth and early years in the Welsh town of Pontypridd to his first hits in the mid-60's, his longtime residences at Las Vegas, and more recently his re-emergence in the the late 90's and collaborations with a whole new generation of artists.

Jones lost his long-suffering wife (Melinda, or Linda) this last spring and he devotes one of the last chapters of the book (written before her death) to her.

So again, nothing really scandalous in the book (he can be very direct and opinionated, though), but an easy, well written read that informs without being all that revealing.

Not bad ,i don't think he revealed too much about himself regarding his personal life ,marriage etc. but entertaining all the same .
