Wow! Hitchens is a fabulous essayist. I was completely out of my depth in the Chesterton essay and found myself treading water in several other essays. Still, several titles have been added to my “For Later” list. His essay “Ohio’s Odd Numbers,” written in 2005, discussed the Hammer’s Texas strategy as it was applied to Ohio redistricting. The scheme subsequently became the gerrymandering scheme known as RedMap, which the Republican party deployed to great effect in the 2010 elections. Hitchens’ 2010 “Shut Up About Armenians or We’ll Hurt Them Again” accurately described Erdogan as the brutal autocrat that all America, with the notable exception of the current President, now know him to be. As dated as some of the essays are, there is much to think about in this book, and it is well worth the read.
