I first read the physical copy while I was an undergrad and it was astonishingly similar to the very odd situations I was finding myself and my friends in. While the scale is ramped up in the book, there is no denying that Stephenson must have witnessed first hand the chaos that comes with the State University system. I think in particular SUNY Purchase may have had more of a Big U feel than some of the others, because this book was spot on.

This was an early work, and it shows. However, it remains highly entertaining for those of us who attended a chaotic state university. The story is an exaggerate mirror of my own experiences during my undergrad years, and the bit about the library black market system is brilliant (if short sighted seeing as it relied on there actually being a physical card catalog).
