After an odd encounter at a grand masquerade ball, Lady Emily becomes embroiled in the murder investigation of one of the guests, a sometime actress trying to pass herself off as the mysterious heiress and world traveler Estella Lamar. Each small discovery, however, leads to more questions. Was the intended victim Miss Lamar or the imposter? And who would want either of them dead? As Emily and Colin try to make sense of all this, a larger puzzle begins to emerge: No one has actually seen Estella Lamar in years, since her only contact has been through letters and the occasional blurry news photograph. Is she even alive? Emily and Colin's investigation of this double mystery takes them from London to Paris, where, along with their friend Cécile, they must scour the darkest corners of the city in search of the truth.

The ninth book in the Lady Emily series

BAD !! Really depressing, the way it handles the mental health issue of a main character and carries this theme throughout the book. I read her other books and really liked them, but this on is very "SUB-PAR".

This is Lady Emily's ninth outing, and while it's not my favorite in the series by any mean, it's still a decent enough effort. I do sometimes feel that the technique Alexander has adopted of alternating chapters between Emily and some other key fixture in the plot -- in this installment, that would be the titular heiress -- forces an awkward structure on some of her novels, though she carried it off in this case better than I thought she would. I wasn't super invested in the mystery, but was still intrigued enough to devour the book, as has been the case so often in this pleasant, if not spectacular series.

The alternating chapters moving from the present to the past is distracting. The overall plot also strains credibility.

I am new to the Lady Emily stories but decided to read the last 3 in the series. The first two were very engrossing and interesting, but this one's plot I found to be way too strange, so that is why I am rating it as I am.
