Biggest lingering question after finishing the book - what happened to all the people wandering off after the villain is defeated? I wonder how many of them got lost in the woods and eaten : D

I really liked this book, and soon after I finished it I read the three other books!
I think Serafina is a great character and I would highly recommend reading it.

It's wonderful to come across a plot about something you had imagined in the past. When I picked up Robert Beatty's Serafina and the Black Cloak, about a girl who lives, hidden away in the basement of Biltmore Estate (home to the Vanderbilts) at the turn of the century, I was instantly intrigued. Though Beatty's story veered away from where I had imagined it might go, producing instead one of the creepiest villains I have read in children's literature, and adding in elements of folklore and mystery to the plot, I had to conclude that this man is a writer with fabulous ideas, and I can't wait to find out what else he has in store for Serafina.

Take an entertaining and enlightening trip back in time to discover the real Biltmore house and grounds. A fun read for all ages! Can’t wait for the next book in this series.

This was a neat and creepy story. I loved the villain - it did seem REALLY dark for a children's book. I sped through it in 3 or 4 sittings.

I thought in some places the writer rambled or wrote redundant sentences. There was also a part in the middle where I was really confused why it was written until the very end. I have read books that dropped hints that weren't so obvious and didn't interrupt the flow of the book. I was really annoyed reading that particular part.

Overall, I won't be continuing this series - it was fun but I enjoy reading more unique and personally meaningful books and this one was just average for me. If someone was interested already, I would recommend reading it but if people were looking for general reading recommendations, I wouldn't recommend reading it.

2.5/5 stars.

An engaging, somewhat creepy and mysterious tale with an unusual setting and protagonist. I enjoyed it.

It's a delightful story, plenty of details, and pretty well written! It was wonderful to read a book about a place that I have been before. Congratulations to Robert Beatty!

Loved this junior fantasy fiction book. A story of disappearing children, evil spirits, magical creatures and a deadly Black Cloak. Loved our heroine Serafina.

This book started good, very mysterious and a likable character. About 100 pages in, it slowed to a crawl with paragraph after paragraph of narrative. The plot seemed too complicated and then the ending, tied up too nicely. It's got some very scary parts which might bother younger or more sensitive kids.

Serafina knows that she is different but doesn't know why. Her father hides her in the basement of the Biltmore Estate and no one is supposed to know she lives there. But she is really good at hiding and so is able to get around the house and grounds just fine without anyone noticing her. But then one night she witnesses a kidnapping and her world is turned upside down. She bravely breaks out of her shell and makes friends she never thought she would and works endlessly to solve the mystery surrounding the missing children. And most importantly, she becomes determined to figure out her past and why her father hides her. This book is a great read for older children who are interested in adventure and mystery and are not afraid of violence. I really enjoyed it and would love to see this as a movie!

An intense book that takes the imagination to the edge and back. A very relatable story of a girl who is trying to find out who she is and how she fits into her world. The author creates a dark world that leaves you scared of shadows but you cannot look away until the end. Loved it.
