"... the first major antiwar film to come out of Germany after World War II, as well as the nation's first postwar film to be widely shown internationally, even securing an Oscar nomination. Set near the end of the conflict, it follows a group of teenage boys in a small town as they contend with everyday matters like school, girls, and parents, before enlisting as soldiers and being forced to defend their home turf in a confused, terrifying battle. This expressively shot, emotionally bruising drama dared to humanize young German soldiers at a historically tender moment"--Container.

Found this movie to be very good - based on a book which is a true story. Amazing that this movie was made in 1958 - one of the first to deal with the topic of World War II and the drafting of young men for the military as the Allies closed in on the German government.

This film is over half a century old and was shot in B/W. It's one of the earlier anti-war film from Germany after WW2. The only major flaw I see in the depiction of the 'good American' soldier, which was not very convincing to me. Seeing life in a German small town toward the end of the war is interesting. In German with subtitles.

Originally produced as a motion picture in 1959, this German antiwar drama depicts the group of teenage boys in a small town as they face one of the final battles in the Second World War.
It is one of the shockingly heart-wrenching antiwar dramas.

A group of German schoolboys are drafted near the end of the war. They are sent to defend a bridge near their town. Nearly all of them die. It is their first day. What the boys were not told was that the bridge was scheduled to be blown up. This is not a spoiler alert, this is history. Near the end of the war Hitler put schoolboys in uniform. They were cannon-fodder and most of them died. War isn't nice. People die.

A great movie about the senselessness of war at all costs.

Outstanding movie. Don't miss the interview with The books's author in the extras.

Based on true events, this is credited as the first German anti-war film after WWII. What happens when you pump a lot of pro-nationalist war propaganda, guns&ammo and a few rocket launchers, into the hearts and minds of young teenagers? What does that say about a society that hands over weapons of war to children? What does that say about a society that allows children to be murdered, on their on "homeland", with weapons of war?

I'd just recently watched a movie about the cadets of the Virginia Military Academy taking part in a battle during our American Civil War, and here's another movie about male teens being drafted out of school to join an army. They, too, are involved in a battle, this time in Germany during World War II.

This is an unforgettable film. The very first German movie after the war that described the horrors through the eyes of the German people. This is a fantastic movie and hard to forget. Highly recommend it!

Very effective. It's best to go into this film knowing the basic plot outline and little else about the story. A story that builds very slowly to a devastating conclusion.
