On a spring morning in London, 1875, Charles Lenox agrees to take time away from his busy schedule as a Member of Parliament to meet an old client at Charing Cross. But when their cryptic encounter seems to lead, days later, to the murder of an innocuous country squire, this fast favor draws Lenox inexorably back into his old profession. Soon he realizes that, far from concluding the murderer's business, this body is only the first step in a cruel plan, many years in the plotting. Where will he strike next? The answer, Lenox learns with slowly dawning horror, may be at the very heart of England's monarchy.

I have enjoyed this series, and I think that this book has one of the best plots. I like the characters and the way they have developed. This book had some surprises at the end, and I was pleased to see what a good man Charles Lenox is, in so many ways.

Hard to get into and rather dry.

Enjoyable read with beloved characters & ingenious plotting that fails to break new ground. Some repeated uncertainties in tone when Lenox speaks; I wasn't quite sure if he was joking or serious. I laughed out loud at what happens to a certain historical personage. I look forward to further surprising developments. The ending is rather like that of The Last Enchantments.

I love this mystery series set in Victorian England. Charles Lenox is an engaging character and a brilliant detective. There's enough going on in the latest installment to make it a page turner, but not so much that it's confusing. The ending is a bit of a surprise, but very satisfying. A wonderful journey!
