The novel begins in Monte Carlo, where our heroine is swept off her feet by the dashing widower Maxim de Winter and his sudden proposal of marriage. Orphaned and working as a lady's maid, she can barely believe her luck. It is only when they arrive at his massive country estate that she realizes how large a shadow his late wife will cast over their lives presenting her with a lingering evil that threatens to destroy their marriage from beyond the grave.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the narration. I hadn't read any reviews or any plot prior to listening to this rendition - and I just could not place what was so incredibly gripping about it, or put it in a specific genre. It is a very interesting book, with typical cheesy adolescent nonsense and a sinister undertone.
A classic, enduring Brit mystery. The audio edition was good, but began to wear on me with some very silly banter. By the last chapters I'd reached a point I really didn't care how it ended.
