On their farm in Denby, Iowa, Rosanna and Walter Langdon abide by time-honored values that they pass on to their five wildly different children. Each chapter covers a single year, beginning in 1920, as American soldiers like Walter return home from World War I, and going up through the early 1950s, with the country on the cusp of enormous social and economic change. As the Langdons branch out from Iowa to both coasts of America, the personal and the historical merge seamlessly.

I enjoy the detailed nature of this book. It could be too much for some, as each year is described in quite a bit of detail, but I find it very peaceful and enjoyable. Great to hear a story of the heartland!

Part of Jane Smiley's appeal for me has been the Iowa settings of her books. Add Lorelei King as the narrator and I knew I had to hear this book. The first book of a planned trilogy, Some Luck covers the years 1920 to 1952 with one year per chapter. It starts in 1920 when Walter and Rosanna Vogel Langdon have their first child, Frank. Walt is just home from WWI France and starting farming. Rosanna vows to be the best farm wife ever. Five more children follow -- the last one being born in 1939. Each child is vastly different and perplex their parents in more ways than one. This books ends with the death of Walter in his farmyard.

I felt totally absorbed by the Langdon family as I listened to the audiobook read by Lorelei King. She conveys warmth and affinity for the characters, making the story even more enjoyable. King even sings softly a capella when called for in the text.
