Set in the twelfth-century England when the empress Maud and Stephen are fighting for the crown of England after the death of Henry, chronicles the struggle to build a cathedral.
I originally read this book many years ago, I believe it was in the early 90's. So this time round I thought why not try the "unabridged 32 cd's" read by John Lee, what a delight. With both versions you not only imagine the characters and situations but you live the moments as each develop and unfold. Everyone should read or listen to this book at least once. This book gives great meaning to the phrase "story time".
I loved this book! Great characters, great story - I did not think that a story about building a church would be so interesting :) I'm originally from England so I love the description of England in the Middle Ages.
An ambitious epic which I rate as a masterpiece. There is plenty of character development, historical interest, surprises and strategies to keep you going though the whole saga.
One of the best epic novels ever. This story spans 3 generations and truly explores the human condition. With highs and low this story and it's characters will stay with you for a long time. (in my case that have stayed with me for years)
Really rich character development and amazing plot lines. John Lee, who narrates this work, really brings the characters alive. I started this audiobook on vacation and listened to it everday on my drive to and from work. Although somewhat time consuming to listen to, my drive home passed very quickly! I will miss the characters now that I have finished the series. Give it a try.

I couldn't put this book down, it was one of my favorites of all times...a 5 star for sure...
One of my ABSOLUTE favorites. I couldn't wait to go sit in 8am and 5pm traffic, just to listen to this. Took me 5 weeks to finish lol.

This book is VERY different to the TV series, and MUCH better. It is long, but well worth staying with to the end, and left me wanting more....

Long, but exceptionally good writing. The author considers it his best work and it is for me.
