Clariel is the daughter of one of the most notable families in the Old Kingdom, with blood relations to the Abhorsen and, most important, to the King. She dreams of living a simple life but discovers this is hard to achieve when a dangerous Free Magic creature is loose in the city, her parents want to marry her off to a killer, and there is a plot brewing against the old and withdrawn King Orrikan. When Clariel is drawn into the efforts to find and capture the creature, she finds hidden sorcery within herself, yet it is magic that carries great dangers. Can she rise above the temptation of power, escape the unwanted marriage, and save the King?

I liked this one the best. Good and bad meld together to make a very complex story. I couldn’t anticipate the direction it would take next. Rarely do I get the pleasure of letting a story have its way with me. Well done.

Clariel may not be considered as entertaining as the original trilogy by some. One reviewer called it a failed tragedy, and I agree with that opinion because neither do we get a classic hero-to-villain story at the end of the book due to a character fault nor is it a true doomed hero story. It has elements of both so that all we're left with is a ball of mixed emotions. However, it does provide us a glimpse in history to build our knowledge of the Old Kingdom and plenty of fodder for discussion. And these are things that will surely bring the Old Kingdom fans back for more.
