This is a more subtle take on urban fantasy. Alex Verus owns a magic shop in London. He is a mage, but with limited and fairly specific abilities. He is able to see possible pathways of the future and that is mostly it. No fireballs or anything else unless he has the help of magic items. This creates some unique story dynamics. The writer does a good job exploring the limits of this ability for how useful it would be and where it would fall short when all you have is that and nothing else. Alex has to deal with situations more by problem solving since he can't just blast his way to solutions. The plot is about what happens when an ancient mage relic is discovered. Light mages and Dark mages both attempt to exert leverage over Alex to gain his help unlocking it's secrets, so he has to find a way through the chaos and survive. This is the first book of a series that has only gotten better so far, and it's a great world to escape into when that is what you need. Recommended for fans of the genre, especially for anyone who enjoys the Dresden Files series.

In Fated we are introduced to London mage Alex Verus who is low on the magical power scale but can see futures. Both Dark mages, who are evil, and Light mages, who aren’t much better, are after an ancient relic of great power. Both want Verus to unlock the relic. Will he succeed and who will ultimately own the relic if he is successful? Along the way are air spirits, a giant spider, and other fantastic creatures. Fated is a light read and great fun with an early reference to Jim Butcher’s Harry Dresden.

This series is a thrilling ride in the world of wizards. If you like the Harry Dresden files you will like Benedict Jacka's Alex Versus series.
