Bev Tunney and Amy Schein have been best friends for years; now, at thirty, they're at a crossroads. Bev is a Midwestern striver still mourning a years-old romantic catastrophe. Amy is an East Coast princess whose luck and charm have too long allowed her to cruise through life. Bev is stuck in circumstances that would have barely passed for bohemian in her mid-twenties: temping, living with roommates, drowning in student-loan debt. Amy is still riding the tailwinds of her early success, but her habit of burning bridges is finally catching up to her. And now Bev is pregnant. As Bev and Amy are dragged, kicking and screaming, into real adulthood, they have to face the possibility that growing up might mean growing apart.

I discovered this book through a website's list of books I should read if I liked the show Girls.... It's an ok read, not exactly groundbreaking. The plot isn't that interesting - but I do think if you're a female in your late 20s/early 30s that you can recognize and relate to what happens between these two friends.

Unlikable people in novels are the BEST. (In real life? Not so much, of course.) I enjoyed this first novel because the characters are the WORST. (By which I mean the BEST; see sentence #1.) The inside look at their selfishness, bad choices, and, most of all, human-ness, made it a compelling read. For fans of the HBO series "Girls", which also has the audacity of having female characters who are just as horrible and flawed as we expect male characters to be.

Not impressed. Just a little story about two friends who were not even that nice to each other. They just keep coming together because no one else likes them. Bleh.
