An interesting story, but the grammar is horrible.

Zane is a 12-year-old boy from New Hampshire spending a quiet week in New Orleans to connect with a grandmother he's never met before--and, ostensibly, the father he never knew due to an accident before Zane was born. When Hurricane Katrina hits, Zane and his dog Bandy find themselves in a fight for survival.

This book will give you a vivid inside look at what happened during the aftermath of Katrina. It raises perplexing questions about how race factored into getting help for Katrina's victims, as well as why some people react to crisis with generosity while others do so with extreme self-preservation. Zane's thoughts and fears are spot-on for his age and the plot is well-paced and engaging. You will enjoy his reactions as an outsider to the flavors and culture of New Orleans, and the meaningful bonds he makes with its people. Things tie up a little too quickly at the end of the story, but it is one that leaves you with good questions to ponder and an understanding of Katrina's devastating impact.

Zane Dupree is a charismatic young boy who is visiting family in New Orleans when Hurricane Katrina hits and he and his dog experience the terror of Katrina's wind, rain, and horrific flooding. Facing death, they are rescued by a kind, elderly musician and a scrappy young girl. Based on the facts of the worst hurricane disaster in U.S. history, this book describes the lawlessness and lack of government support during the disaster as well as the generosity and courage of those who risked their lives and safety to help others.
