From Library Staff

One of the best albums of the 1980's...period. A 44 song sprawl as ambitious as it was impressive. Melodic and jazzy as much as it is punk, it is the intelligence and the purity of emotion that ultimately set this one apart.

This double album is not just one of the greatest rock'n'roll records of the 1980s, it is one of the greatest recordings of any genre of music of all time. I recently finished reading Michael Fournier's 33 1/3/Continuum book devoted to DOUBLE NICKELS, so I have been listening to the record a lot again. I purchased a copy upon its release in 1984 and basically listened to it every day for the next four years. If there was a zenith in the 1980s it was 1984. Rock Against Reagan and the holy SST trinity of Husker Du's ZEN ARCADE, the Minutemen's DOUBLE NICKELS ON THE DIME and the Meat Puppets second eponymous album. We were riding high. Listen to D. Boon sing "It's expected I'm Gone" on side one and ask yourself, "What else sounds like this?" Swagger without the pose. Testosterone minus the machismo. Brilliance coupled with complete honesty.
