I've always been a little confused about "adult animation." Thanks to Disney and Saturday morning cartoons, most people will always associate animations with cartoons and kids' movies. Ralph Bakshi's "Fritz the Cat" was notable as the first x-rated animated film and found that key "adult animation" demographic of pasty adolescents and stoners. The apotheosis (or nadir) of this may have been the teen fantasy "Heavy Metal." The much more obscure "Rock & Rule" has a bit of a "Heavy Metal" vibe. It has more of a plot, but also mixes music and slightly druggy animation. If you're not an adolescent , it's probably not for you. It's kinda terrible. The music would seem to be the redeeming quality, as it features Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, Cheap Trick, and Debby Harry, but none of them are doing their best work.

I found this to be rather silly and didn't bother finishing to watch.

Yes, it's a bit cheesy, and yes, the animation is nowhere compared to today's standards, but this is a cool, iconic story about good over evil, with rock & roll. Listen for Catherine O'Hara as the tattoo artist. Also, the first animated film to be completely produced in Canada (the actress who does the voice of Angel is from Edmonton).
Absolutely not for young children!

Very important to note that this movie is absolutely not suitable for children. The subject matter is too mature and it contains nudity and graphic violence.

Violence: not so much violence, as images of a demon that could be very frightening for young children.
